Elizabeth Hill-Westmoreland, PhD, RN, comes to the SON from a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the Division of Gerontology and will be coordinating Adult Health Nursing at the SON. Jodi Shaefer, PhD, RN, started at the SON as a pediatric clinical instructor and applied for a faculty position due to her positive experience with students and the curriculum. Her research interests are infant mortality, adolescent bereavement, racial disparities for infant health, and depression. Janice Hoffman, RN, MSN, comes to the school from The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she was the Director of the SPRING (Social and Professional Reality Integration for Nurse Graduates). She will be supporting/coordinating Adult Health Nursing and Teaching Strategies in Nursing. Her research interests include critical thinking in undergraduate students and new nurse graduate transition issues. Congratulations to recently promoted SON faculty members:
Patricia Abbott, PhD, RN, BC, FAAN, was appointed to the Editorial Board of Hispanic Healthcare International, the journal of the International Association of Hispanic Nurses. She is the project lead/principal investigator on “Knowledge-Based Charting (KBC) An Evidence-Based Computerized Clinical Documentation System to Advance Nursing Practice and Interdisciplinary Integration”—a unique academic partnership between the School of Nursing and Eclipsys Corporation, which is funded through a $2.625 million grant from Eclipsys. Anne Belcher, PhD, RN, AOCN, FAAN, presented “Preparation for Spiritual Care: Evidence for Curricular Reform” at the Shenandoah University Sigma Theta Tau International 7th Annual Nursing Research Day. Jackie Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN, was the first nurse to win the Vollmer Award. Bestowed by the American Society of Criminology, the award recognizes a criminologist whose research scholarship has contributed to justice or to the treatment or prevention of criminal or delinquent behavior. Miyong Kim, PhD, RN, FAAN, will serve as a founding member of a core editorial team that will launch the new Journal on Community-Based Participatory Research. As guest editor of the new online journal Excellence in Nursing Knowledge, Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN, wrote “Building Capacity for Evidence-Based Practice.” Sharon Olsen, MS, CS, NP, AOCN, received the 2004 American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Award in the category of Nursing Research for Instruments for Clinical Healthcare Research, which she co-edited. Linda Pugh, PhD, RNC, FAAN, has completed her three-year appointment as the director of the Baccalaureate program. Her accomplishments as director include the review and revision of the BS curriculum, the SON’s receipt of NLNAC and CCNE accreditation, and increased growth and diversity of the student body. Cynda Rushton, DNSc, RN, FAAN, has been appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee for the National Children’s Study. She will serve on the committee’s ethics subgroup. As director of the Johns Hopkins Harriet Lane Compassionate Care Program (HLCC), Rushton organized the Maryland Pediatric Care Summit last fall. Phyllis Sharps, PhD, RN, FAAN, presented “Passport to Health: Reducing Violence-Related Health Disparities” at the Shenandoah University Sigma Theta Tau International 7th Annual Nursing Research Day. Dan Sheridan, PhD, RN, FNE-A, FAAN, received a $249,000 subcontract grant from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid to write a web-based “Elder Abuse Neglect National Curriculum for Surveyors.” The overall $350,000 non-competing project is being conducted with the University of Maryland’s Center for Health Work-force Development. Carol Smith, PhD, RNC, PNP and her coworkers at the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy Clinic at Bayview Medical Center were awarded the 2005 Child Health Promotion Award from the Maryland Childhood Immunization Partnership in recognition of the high quality of health care they provided.
Faculty Earn Awards For Excellence At a school-wide award ceremony last May, Dean Martha N. Hill announced the recipients of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Awards and the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) Dean’s Awards. The Excellence in Teaching Awards reward faculty members who stand out in their role as both teacher and mentor to students. The 2004 winners were Jo Walrath (BS award) and Joan Kub (MSN award). Faculty member Betty Jordan was a winner of the Dean’s Awards, given to outstanding employees who exemplify the school’s values and set a standard of excellence in the workplace. Staff winners of this award were Daphine Miller-Clarke, senior administrative assistant/supervisor, and Mary O’Rourke, director of admissions. Honorable mentions were awarded to faculty member Marie Nolan and staff member Lee Swartz, project coordinator at the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing.
