Precious Cargo
Using a baby doll, a Johns Hopkins Hospital nurse from the late 1930s demonstrates use of an infant carrier. Though common belief has it that the box was used by public health nurses to provide a sanitary workspace for examining babies in their homes, this one was actually used by the hospital’s outside obstetrical service as a carrier to transport premature infants born at home to the hospital.
