BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES: TOMORROW'S VISION

Drawing of exterior
This two-phase project, to be built over the next decade, will create an urban oasis that uses progressive architecture to create an environment where faculty, staff, and students can interact with colleagues from other Hopkins schools and institutes to provide a cross-pollination of ideas and experiences.

Phase One (left), to be started in 2008, will include a glassy, four-story atrium to the east of the Pinkard Building. The atrium will connect to a second eight-story building housing the nursing school and the Phoebe Berman Bioethics Institute. A sunny garden will open south to the community, and a green rooftop with benches will provide a peaceful place to sit.

The new building will double the current space for offices, classrooms, and labs, providing more than 100,000 square feet of additional space. It will include two 175-seat lecture halls, two 30-seat computer labs, small break-out rooms, classrooms, and new Dean's Office, and a new suite for the school's Center for Nursing Research.

Phase Two
(right) will include a second atrium, east of the new building, that will connect the school to a planned public health building. The complex will be connected by bridges, skywalks, and atrium corridors.

To date, the school has raised $15 million toward the $45-50 million nursing portion of the building. (The entire project will cost $65 million.)
