JERILYN (Jeri) ALLEN, ScD, RN, FAAN

Professor and M. Adelaide Nutting Chair
Department of Acute and Chronic Care
Associate Dean for Research

" Nurse researchers bring a unique skill set that emphasizes holistic approaches and a person-centered focus to the process of clinical investigation. They are the same skills that characterize our work at the bedside or in community-based care. In that way, our practice influences our research, just as new research findings should be incorporated into our teaching and practice. "

Dr. Jerilyn Allen is known throughout the international nursing and medical communities for her research on the prevention of cardiovascular disease and her investigations of beneficial lifestyle modifications for persons with or at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Through her clinical and community-based research, Dr. Allen has developed and tested innovative models to advance nursing care such as a nurse case management program for the treatment of cardiovascular risk factors and improving adherence to national guidelines in federally qualified community clinics to improve health outcomes in patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease in urban underserved communities. As the principal investigator and co-investigator on multidisciplinary research teams in the medical and public health arenas, she has advocated for the nursing perspective and issues critical to nursing care. This has shaped the scope of research questions asked and their relevance to nursing and cardiovascular health. Dr. Allen is a highly regarded mentor, teaching, guiding, and developing faculty and students in research within the Schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University and other universities nationally and internationally.
