LORI EDWARDS , MPH, RN, APN, BC
Instructor, Clinical Specialist in Community Health
"
Working in partnership means that we must truly listen and envision change with
"new eyes". This is the foundation from which I strive to promote the health of
vulnerable people and communities.
"
Lori Edwards, a clinical specialist in community health nursing and public
health, has directed the Community Outreach Program and the Returned Peace Corps
Fellows Program at the School of Nursing since joining the faculty in 1994.
Her teaching, research, and clinical work focus on community-based care,
particularly among underserved populations where she has integrated
international heath care models into programs designed to reduce health
disparities in Baltimore populations. Edwards has been honored widely as an
educator, mentor and community nursing expert. She has won several SON teaching
awards and in 2004, was the Maryland Association of Higher Education outstanding
faculty of the year. In 2007, she was named the Nurse Health Care Hero of the
Year by the Maryland Daily Record for her leadership of the SON Community
Outreach Program that educates, trains, and places over 150 student nurses to
work with Baltimore’s most underserved populations. Because Edwards loves
teaching nursing students and believes in learning, she is pursuing a doctoral
degree in public health and is conducting a community-based project addressing
occupational health issues among Vietnamese nail salon workers. Edwards balances
her life as faculty, clinician, researcher, and student with a personal passion
for ballroom, swing, and Latin dancing and also for outdoor adventures.
