DIVERSITY EVENTS

Honoring Diversity Week African dancers and drummers with faculty member Bernie Keenan

Honoring Diversity Week is a celebration of diversity at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

The week coincides with Peace Corps Week, held during the week of March 1st, and is sponsored by the school's Peace Corps Fellows Program, the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumni Association, and the school's Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee.

Each day of the celebration highlights the art and culture of a different part of the world.

Visitors can watch as Tibetan Buddhist monks work throughout the day to create a sand mandala. At the end of the day, the monks distribute small packages of the sand in a ceremony focusing on compassion.

A Ceremonial MaskThroughout the week, displays created by faculty, staff, and students showcase different ethnicities, sexual orientations, traditions, and religions.

An art gallery displays diverse collections of art, crafts, and photography, as well as personal artwork belonging to school members. Lunchtime presentations have focused on topics like Native American health, community work in Haiti, and diversity in the workplace.

Closing ceremonies have included performances by African dancers and drummers, break dancing school children, and rappers - including staff member John Shearin (pictured left).

Plans are under way for next year's Diversity Week and for smaller diversity-related activities to be held throughout the year.
