CULTURAL COMPETENCY AND DIVERSITY COMMITTEE

The Faculty Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee is an elected
committee of the Faculty Senate, which includes six faculty members
and is open to interested staff.
The committee also has a student component, with approximately fifteen
student representatives.
The mission of the Committee is to:
(1) increase cultural competency skills of the faculty
and students in the School of Nursing.
(2) facilitate increased diversity
of faculty, students, and staff
within the School of Nursing.

Bylaws
Members shall include six members of the Faculty Senate and a student
representative. Three representatives of the committee will serve as ex-officio
members of the Baccalaureate, Master’s and PhD Admissions committees.
The School of Nursing representative from the JHU Diversity Leadership Council
will participate in Committee activities. The Associate Dean for Faculty
Affairs will serve as an ex-officio member.
There will be at least one meeting per semester and shall be called by the
Chairperson as necessary. Responsibilities include:
- Increase the cultural awareness, diversity,
sensitivity, and competency of faculty members.
- Sponsor at least one annual workshop on cultural
competency for the faculty, staff, and students.
- Assess and monitor aspects of culture in the curriculum
and courses with the School of Nursing.
- Consult with course coordinators, as needed, to
increase or improve aspects of cultural competency in course content.
- Act as a resource (including collecting resources) for
faculty and students on aspects of culture.
- Sponsor guest faculty lectures who are culturally
diverse or who can address the concept of cultural diversity or cultural
competency training.
- Participate in monitoring the ethnic and gender mix of
faculty, students, and staff.
- Recommend proactive activities to increase minority
representation in faculty, students, and staff.
Meetings
Meetings shall be called by the Chairperson as necessary (meetings are currently
monthly). Decisions and voting will be made by the elected members.
Meetings are open to anyone in the School of Nursing. Participation by staff is
encouraged.
