She earned a MA in Nursing Administration from New York University in 1986. In the present program Anne has completed most of her course requirements and her comprehensive exams. She will start collecting dissertation data in Tanzania in September 2004.

Dissertation Focus or Abstract:

Violence is a widespread international problem with biological, psychological, social and environmental roots, and serious health consequences (WHO, 2002).

Africa is believed to be the most violent continent. Yet Tanzania is a country that has maintained political peace against great odds. In addition, recent research suggests that Tanzania has very low homicide and suicide rates. The goal of the research to be described here is to coordinate with new national and international efforts to decrease violence, by describing individual and family attributes in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania that may contribute to peace. The research fits into an Ecological Framework that includes national, community, household/family, and individual realms. The distinctly African concept of utu/ubuntu that pertains to the promotion of the common good by building community through shared humanhood will be explored.

An Injury Surveillance System newly developed by WHO for resource poor settings will be established at the mortuary of the country’s major referral hospital (Muhimbili Medical Center). Data (including age, sex, place of occurrence, residence, and occupation) on all the homicide deaths of Dar es Salaam will be collected for year 2005. The families of those who died will be interviewed through a Household Survey to gather information about: i) socio-economic status and ii) the quantity and cohesiveness of their interfaces with other individuals, families, and community institutions. Neighboring families who did not experience a violent death will also be interviewed. The cases and their controls will be compared. Then, a sample will be interviewed in-depth about: i) their perceptions of the violence that manifests in their lives, ii) contextual factors that risk or protect, and iii) culturally appropriate ways of decreasing violence and increasing well-being at the individual, family and community realms. The findings will inform ongoing interventions in this economically deprived setting.

Dissertation Title:
Tentatively “ Reduction of Multiple Risk Factors in Cardiovascular Disease”

Dissertation Focus or Abstract:
Previous studies have revealed several risk factors in cardiovascular disease. It is more reasonable to approach those multiple risk factors with stratified method rather than intervene one risk factor at a time. The focus of the study is to identify strategies to manage the multiple risk factors of cardiovascular disease focusing on culturally specified factors among Korean American Immigrants.

Dissertation Title:
CVD in Older Women: Socioeconomic status and allostatic load

Dissertation Focus or Abstract:
Despite recent national policy emphasis on health disparities, there is a dearth of research examining the association of low socioeconomic status, increased stress, and cardiovascular disease in older women. Research has shown that allostatic load – a measure of cumulative stress-related biological risk - can predict cardiovascular disease1. The research addressing the role of stress and SES has predominantly been with Caucasian, middle aged, employed individuals. It is a promising hypothesis that increased stress of low-SES could be a factor in higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease in older women of low SES. The proposed study will be a preliminary step in determining whether the increased cardiovascular disease in older women of low SES could be, in part, due to the increased stress inherent in low SES.
