Description of main volunteer activities:
I worked with my closest rural clinic/health center, providing nutrition, sanitation, HIV prevention education services to my immediate community and villages within a 25km radius. I facilitated a “Training of Trainers” for 60 active community leaders on topics such as sanitation, nutrition, HIV prevention and skills to promote education and communication amongst community members.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
I have always loved HIV and STD prevention education; however, during my Peace Corps service I saw that patients and clients of my rural clinic were particularly receptive of education within the clinical setting. I want to combine treatment with education to forge strong relationships with patients. I believe behavior modification more often is a result of a trusting relationship with a healthcare provider.
Impact of RPCV Fellows experience:
Impact of RPCV Fellows experience: An instant friendship is formed with strangers when you know they went through very similar experiences, especially that of the day when you’re dropped off at site and the Land Cruiser drives away off into the sunset, leaving you in your new "home".
