Description of main volunteer activities:
I worked for an association of people living with HIV/AIDS, focusing on organizational and skills development and capacity building. I was their “accidental techie,” English teacher, and one of their grant writers. I was also their events photographer and translator during visits from international donors and during a two-week regional training conference for child development and psycho-social support held in South Africa. I secured around $16,000 USD in grants funds from the UN Small Grants Program to construct 50 latrines for the association’s beneficiaries (people living with HIV/AIDS and orphans and vulnerable children). I was also working as the office secretary and under the direction of my organization, typed up several handwritten proposals from partnering organizations.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
I enjoyed helping others in the area of health but felt that I would be of greater service by increasing my knowledge and capacity to provide more specialized assistance to those in need.
