Volunteer Position
Maternal and Child Health
Description of main volunteer activities:
My role was to work with the local health clinic in educating the local population about health issues. The main duties I took on were educating the local population including school age children and mothers about the importance of brushing ones teeth. I also painted many health murals related to the topic and two world map murals. I received funding for two projects including a traditional midwife training and building latrines at the local elementary school. I co-authored a “how to teach health lessons book” that will help incoming PCV’s in morocco learn and translate health lessons into three different languages.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
I knew I wanted to pursue nursing when I went into the Peace Corps but the experiences I had in Morocco reiterated my decision. I have always loved working with children in the States and that is what the majority of my work ended up being in Morocco. I hope to someday work with children as a nurse or NP.
Impact of RPCV Fellows experience:
I’m not really sure how to answer this question as I have only become an RPCV fellows and so have not experienced it yet. Although I can say that financially the impact is very significant and appreciated.
