Volunteer Position
Health Educator/Program Manager
Description of main volunteer activities:
My main assignment as a Health Educator in the beautiful village of Malembo was to direct a project to build pit latrines for 150 village homes. Most of my days were spent in 6 ft holes, encouraging the workers to "Keep on digging!!".
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
Through my service, I saw the impact of effective health education and the resulting behavior change. Joining the medical field had always been one of my primary goals. Through Peace Corps I realized that a career in nursing would give me the opportunity to be at the forefront of patient education and still be involved in the clinical environment.
Impact of RPCV Fellows experience:
I am excited about being an RPCV Fellow as I now have the chance to apply what I learned in Malembo here in East Baltimore. Although there may not be an urgent need for pit latrines, learned skills like team leadership and effective communication will be applicable in my nursing courses and in my community service projects.
