Description of main volunteer activities:
I worked mainly with the hospital staff to help with vaccines, pregnancy consultations, HIV testing, and family planning education. I did a lot of nutrition presentations teaching mothers how to plan and make meals that were protein and vegetable sufficient for all members of their family. I also helped the women in my village start a soybean farm and taught the women how to make different soy products including soymilk, tofu, and roasted soybeans. I helped create and lead several HIV information bike highway tours along the east coast of Madagascar and helped with the countries 1st and 2nd annual HIV bike race.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
I was able to see the impact that one nurse can have on an entire village and I knew I wanted to become a nurse so I could help people as my village nurse helped so many people in Madagascar. Nurses get to create such a special bond with their patients and are able to educate and heal people both externally and internally.
Impact of RPCV Fellows experience:
My RPCV fellows experience has been great so far. I have met such amazing RPCV''''''''s from all over the world who have had great experiences in their countries of service. The friendships I have made with other RPCV''''''''s is invaluable and I am so happy to be in a program that has so many wonderful RPCV''''''''s to share ideas and cultural experiences with.
