Description of main volunteer activities:
For two years I served as an English Teacher to the students of Secondary School #1 in Staryi Krym, A.R. Crimea. I also worked on two secondary projects, the first of which was a PEPFAR sponsored HIV/AIDS awareness week which involved the participation of students and faculty from the three schools in town. The goal of the project was to provide HIV/AIDS education to teachers and students in an area with an increasing rate of HIV infection. My second project was a multicultural awareness Summer Camp which welcomed students from the three diverse schools in Staryi Krym. The week long camp featured lessons in health, diversity and country studies along with a field trip to the lovely beaches of Crimea (photo).
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
Volunteering in Ukraine helped me to realize two of my greatest passions are health and community service. With this knowledge in hand I have chosen to pursue Public Health Nursing which will grant me the opportunity to continue to serve and learn from those who truly may not be able to help themselves
