Description of main volunteer activities:
Trained teachers to incorporate environmental education into the
primary school curriculum, coordinated an income-generating project for teenagers to make cards from recycled paper, and organized
subsistence farmers to lobby for educational opportunities, produce markets and donations.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
I met and was inspired by so many people working in the healthcare field, both Jamaican and American, that had committed themselves to caring for people and giving them hope in often the most hopeless of
situations. I read Mountains Beyond Mountains, helped care for friends
that fell ill in Jamaica, applied for an internship at Medecins Sans Frontieres when I returned home and that was that!
