Description of main volunteer activities:
During my service in the Philippines I worked as a community environmental educator on a small, protected island called Himokilan. I worked with members of the island community and the municipality to promote sustainable solid waste management practices, which included community-wide composting, recycling, and developing recycled handicraft for ecotourism promotion. In addition to serving as an environmental educator, at various times I found myself playing the role of health educator, English teacher, fitness instructor/educator, and karaoke singer extraordinaire.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
My experience in the Philippines taught me that sustainable environmental change cannot happen when the fundamental health needs of individuals, families, and communities are not met. I chose to pursue public health nursing in order to help meet these basic health needs and to continue serving disadvantaged populations in a meaningful way.
