Description of main volunteer activities:
I worked with business and restaurant owners in my small town in Kenya''s Rift Valley to organize a solid waste sanitation committee to petition the government to aid in rubbish clean-up. This group organized a town clean-up day and Environmental Day that focused on educating the community about sanitation and taking pride in one''s environment.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
I learned in Kenya what it was to be cared for and listened to, and I learned a love of community. Additionally, during service in the public health sector, I realized that the advancement of health is not contingent on medicine or policy alone; improving conditions in the third world (or even in developed countries) relies on collaboration of many sectors. I feel nursing will put me in the ideal role to aid in the pressing health issues of my community, as well as work for health policy change.
