Description of main volunteer activities:
My primary work as a Peace Corps volunteer was teaching English to middle school and high school students in a small city in southern Kyrgyzstan. I spent much of my classroom time working on conversational English skills, teaching cultural lessons, and promoting leadership. I also focused on youth development within my town; providing after school activities for students, including yoga classes, an ecology club, and pen-pal exchange. Outside of school I worked at a ''Center for Disabled Children'' twice a week, providing English lessons and playing games. I fully enjoyed immersing myself in the local culture and getting to know the various people in my community.
How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
My experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer made me realize the extent to which I value my relationships and interactions with the people that surround me. The fulfillment I found in direct service work led me to my interest in the nursing field. During the two years I was in Kyrgyzstan I saw a significant lack of basic health and nutrition knowledge. I hope to use my nursing skills to bring better health care and knowledge to international, as well as local, communties.
