How Peace Corps service influenced decision to go into nursing and future plans:
I heart young people - their energy and creativity is unstoppable. I also love traveling (especially for the street food!), and learning from people. So after PC, I continued youth organizing work in DC for 3 years on sexuality education and other social justice campaigns. All the while, I felt like there was something still missing. In the last 2 years, whether in contact with people 24/7 at a local clinic or on rotations, or while doing research to address the epidemiology of female rape homicide in South Africa, I knew I found "it" in nursing. I’ve learned that public health nursing will help me to holistically meet both a person''''s and community''''s needs. In the future, I see myself both here and abroad having a fluid career tying together my skills and passions as a nurse, educator, researcher, epidemiologist, advocate, and public health professional with communities impacted most by conflict, violence, health disparities and HIV.
Impact of RPCV Fellows experience:
Met some amazing pioneers in other RPCVs with an awesome array of interests, values, passions; Enjoyed opportunities to continue community based work in education, sexual violence and HIV VCT within local Baltimore programs & settings (house of ruth, st. bernardine’s school, chase brexton health services/clinic); Enjoyed service opportunities through SOURCE; Fun social community; and last but not least, the grateful chance to fund part of my education through RPCV grant/scholarship money.
