Church Notes

As with everything else in this changing economy, the space allotted within this wonderful magazine for "Church Notes" has been downsized. That's okay, because we can still be kept up to date with the information I receive - just in a briefer format.

Homecoming 2009
Save the dates of September 25-26, 2009 for another fabulous Homecoming. Susan Riddleberger '73 and I serve on the committee, and we are working hard to make this another memorable weekend. Let's break our 2008 record of 68 CHH alumnae in attendance!

50th Reunion: Class of 1959
The Class of 1959 will celebrate its 50th reunion at Homecoming in September. If you plan to attend (and you know you must!), contact your former Class President, Joann Hollinger Hersh '59 at 717-762-5234, hersh@innernet.net, or 13200 Old Mill Road, Waynesboro, PA 17268.

40th Reunion: Class of 1969
I had the pleasure of recently running into Barbara Zelenka Spink '69 at Union Memorial Hospital. Barbara tells me that the class of 1969 is planning a dinner at Liberatore's restaurant in Timonium on September 19. Contact Barbara for more details at bzspink@comcast.net.

And the Girl in the CHH Cap is...
Within a day or so of the spring 2009 magazine being delivered, I was contacted by three alums who reported that the CHH nurse in the photo performing CPR was none other than Katherine "Kitty" Blackwell Pyne '60. And, speaking of caps, as I recently left a local hospital, I couldn't help notice a nurse arriving for the night shift wearing - you guessed it - a Church Home Cap! Yes, Martha Pyles Jolle, '65 still wears her cap every time she works!

Church Home & Hospital Unit to be Dedicated at Good Samaritan
A new unit, dedicated to Church Home & Hospital, will open in the O'Neil Building at Good Samaritan Hospital this fall under the management of Director Catherine Micklewright Rossetti '71. Former Church Home nurses are invited to attend the dedication. For details, contact Gennie Darby at 443-444-4887 or geannine.darby@medstar.net.

VIP Alumnae
If space permitted, I would have liked to share with you the many facets of dedicated service to our country of Ruth Taylor '35, retired Colonel United States Army, and Doris Dugas '42, retired 1st Lieutenant, United States Army.

Both of these charming and fascinating women passed away in 2008. I have had the privilege to learn more about them and hope to be able to "gush" about them both in future publications. They are truly our shining stars and I only wish I would have the opportunity to sit down and hear firsthand about D-Day, serving under General Patton, dining at the White House while Chief Nurse at Walter Reed Army Hospital or caring for the victims of war.

For now, let us offer them our prayers and special thoughts for their families who are considering donations of precious artifacts for the archives. Nurses who have served in the military during war time are continually researched and studied. The books, photos, uniforms and more that these women saved over the years will hopefully hold a place of prominence at the Alan Mason Chesney Archives in the future. Look for more about Ruth and Doris as an ongoing Church Notes item.
