Course Detail
Description: Rapid advances in health care impacts the delivery of nursing care. Nurses require both the requisite knowledge and skill to effectively understand and implement necessary nursing interventions. This course provides a foundation for the student in basic nursing interventions integral to providing effective nursing care. Students will explore the scientific principles related to nursing interventions and become familiar with the psychomotor skills necessary to safely and effectively implement these interventions. Topics for discussion and practice include principles and techniques of: measuring vital signs, documenting nursing care, assisting with a patient's mobility needs, medical and surgical asepsis, maintaining a safe environment, assisting with a patient's elimination needs, promoting hygiene, providing comfort, administering medications, providing enteral and parenteral therapy, assisting with a patient's cardiac needs, assisting with a patient's respiratory needs, care of the postoperative patient, and initial assessment and management of mass casualties. Throughout the course emphasis is placed on theory acquisition and application of theory to practice via hands-on learning in a laboratory setting. The lab setting allows students to practice both psychomotor and problem solving skills with guidance and assistance of faculty. Prerequisites: None.
