NR110.410C Special Topics in Nursing: Around the world- Preparing for Global Nursing
Description: This course is designed to expand the student's learning in a specified topic related to nursing practice. Advanced theories and principles related to the delivery of nursing care in selected settings and/or with selected patient populations are presented. The course builds on the previous coursework throughout the curriculum. In this section of special topics, students will be provided with an overview of global health in preparation for nursing practice in a variety of settings around the world. Content will synthesize knowledge from public health nursing. An overview of strategies that promote the health of nations will be discussed including infectious disease control in developing countries to chronic disease prevention and management in developed nations. Health threats and public health issues specific to regions of the world will be presented as case studies. The complexity of factors that affect the health of countries will be discussed, such as health care delivery systems, governments, politics, religion, environment, geography, war, and culture. An emphasis on the developing world and issues such as infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tropical diseases will prepare the student for nursing roles in developing countries. International professional nursing organizations, nongovernmental and governmental organizations and agencies, and other international health organizations will be presented as influencing global health and also as potential employment areas. Critical inquiry using evidence based research, epidemiological studies, and public health methods will be required and developed through case studies and presentations.
