INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO SPECIAL STUDENTS

Graduate Special Students are students with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing who are not matriculated in any graduate program. They are permitted to enroll in selected graduate courses at the School of Nursing. They may or may not intend to apply for admission to one of the graduate degree programs. The maximum number of credits that may be taken and applied to a matriculated program is 6.

Baccalaureate Special Students are students who are interested in enrolling in a baccalaureate course in nursing and are not matriculated in any baccalaureate degree program. They may or may not intend to apply to the baccalaureate degree program. The maximum number of credits that may be taken and applied to a matriculated program is 6.

Policies:

  1. Any student registering as a special student must provide proof of satisfactory completion of a baccalaureate degree for master’s courses and a master’s degree for doctoral courses. Baccalaureate special students must provide proof of satisfactory completion of the prerequisites for the upper-division nursing major. Exceptions to this rule include courses in Nutrition and Biostatistics. This proof may take the form of an official transcript, a diploma, or a letter from a university official, and must be submitted to the Registrar's Office within the first semester of enrollment at the School of Nursing.
  2. Special students may not enroll in any clinical courses. Courses available to special students are designated in the course listings with an asterisk by the course number (e.g. 100.500*).
  3. The maximum number of credits that can be accrued by a baccalaureate or a graduate special student is six. Special students may apply for admission to a degree program at any time before completing six (6) credits but will not be allowed to take courses beyond the six-credit limit without being matriculated into a program or obtaining permission from the appropriate program director.
  4. There is no guarantee that applicants who have taken courses as a special student will be admitted to a degree program. All applicants to a degree program must meet the admission requirements outlined in the School of Nursing catalog.

Faculty members will be assigned by the Senior Associate Dean as advisors to special students. These advisors will authorize course registration and be available for consultation. The names of the advisors may be obtained from the Registrar's Office, Room 127.
