Through its decade-long Community Outreach Program , the School of Nursing offers life-changing learning and discovery experiences for each generation of Hopkins nurses. Providing health services at institutions throughout Baltimore - such as schools, churches, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and health clinics - introduces Hopkins nursing students to community health nursing.

Doulas, also called birth companions, are an increasingly welcome presence in the local community for women about to have a baby. The school's Birth Companions Program is preparing students to fill this unique role during labor and birth.

Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who receive Peace Corps Fellowship funding participate in the Community Outreach Program.Their global experiences shape and form their local service.

Students learn more about community public health through the courses "Community Outreach to Underserved Populations in Urban Baltimore," "Public Health Nursing," "Special Topics in Nursing: Public Health Nursing in Diverse U.S. Communities," "Theory and Practice of Public Health Nursing," "Population-Based Public Health Nursing Interventions," and "Public Health Nursing Leadership & Management."

The master's degree in Public Health Nursing, a joint degree Master of Science in Nursing / Master of Public Health, and a master's program for Nurse Practitioners with a Public Health Nursing Focus carry the community health practice and research experiences to the graduate level.
