ADMISSIONS: POST-DEGREE OPTIONS
Certificate in Advanced Forensic Nursing
Based on current published research and evidence-based practice, standards
established by the International Association of Forensic Nurses and current
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Disaster Training Modules, this
option prepares registered nurses to serve individuals in need of
comprehensive assessment and nursing care following intentional,
non-intentional injury, and disasters.
Upon completion this option, the graduate will be prepared to: a) recognize
injury pathology throughout the life span; b) collaborate with criminologists,
members of the justice system, and related healthcare professionals; c)
demonstrate key elements necessary for comprehensive emergency and disaster
preparedness, and d) understand federal and state-level policies related to
victim services. Clinical experiences will include a diverse range of
environments including emergency and acute care departments; sexual assault
examination programs; child and/or adult protective service investigation units;
psychiatric forensic treatment and evaluation units; death investigation teams,
and governmental and non-governmental agencies.
It is recommended this program be completed in two consecutive semesters. The
program begins in September (Fall Semester) of each year.
Prerequisites:
1. Bachelor Degree in Nursing
2. Master's degree
3. Experience as a forensic nurse or an introductory college-level course in
Forensic Nursing
4. Graduate level pathophysiology course
