VOICES OF THE
SON
What
does it mean to be a nurse?
In
this essay,
graduate student Keira Wickliffe explains that although definitions of nursing
widely vary, the American Nursing Association's Code of Ethics can give
definition and unity to the field of nursing.
Nursing Director Offers Words of Wisdom to New
Nurses
The
Johns Hopkins Hospital SPRING Program is a
year-long internship program to support new
graduate nurses in their transition to their
first professional RN role. A celebration for
interns who had completed their year in the
program was held at the SON in September with
keynote speaker Dr. Judith Rohde,
Director of Nursing for Neurosciences and
Psychiatric Nursing. Her words of wisdom for the
new nurses:
- In an emergency, take your own pulse
first! Learn to take care of yourself so you
can better help others.
- Cherish your nursing competencies and
skills.
- Foster relationships with other health
care professionals.
- Listen to your patients and make them
your center.
- Keep your sense of humor and your
perspective

Student + Alumni = Inspiration
Julie Story '07 blogs about attending the 2006
Homecoming festivities and meeting Hopkins
nursing alumni. "This weekend I was so
inspired," she writes, "by some of the most
incredible and amazing people who are part of
the legacy and tradition of the Alumni
Association."
