AWARDS PROMOTIONS

Rosemary Mortimer
Instructor Rosemary Mortimer, MS, MEd, RN (right), was installed as the new president of the Maryland Nurses Association on October 19. Previously, Mortimer served as co-chair of the legislative committee for MNA and as a District 2 second vice president and District 2 president.

Gladys Mouro, Assistant Hospital Director for Nursing Services at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), was presented with The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) 2007 Valor in Nursing Award. The award was presented October 4 at the Eleventh National Magnet Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The SON has a formal academic collaboration with AUB.

Miyong T. Kim
, PhD, RN, FAAN (left), has been promoted to the rank of professor. She teaches advanced statistical courses and instrumentation courses in the doctoral program at the School of Nursing.

Haera Han, PhD, RN and Miyong Kim, PhD, RN, FAAN, both of the Department of Community Public Health, won this year's Best Published Paper Award for the Asian Pacific Islander Caucus for their article "Barriers to and Strategies for Recruiting Korean Americans for Community-Partnered Health Promotion Research."  The article was published in Volume 9, Number 2 of the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health. The award was presented on November 6 in Washington, DC.

Accelerated ’08 students Ashley Beam, Meagan Fritzler and Nicole Burr participated in the “Start to Finish MS” bike tour in New York City on October 14. As the Nursing MS Hopkins team, they rode 66 miles over the course of five and a half hours and raised more than $700 for the cause.

Aisling McGuckin, a clinical faculty member and alumna of the school's Accelerated and MSN/MPH programs, received a 2007 B'More Fund Award on November 7th at the B'More Fund Awards Gala, held at Baltimore's Creative Alliance. With a letter of support from fellow faculty member Lisa Kelley, McGuckin was honored for her work as founder of The CLEAR Project, which trains refugee and asylee women to be Community Health Workers and Certified Nursing Assistants and promotes their employment in these roles.Dan Sheridan

Dan Sheridan, PhD, RN, FAAN (right) associate professor and forensics expert of the Department of Community Public Health earned his Sexual Assault Nurse Examine-Adult and Adolescent (SANE-A) certification in October.

Congratulations to the following recipients of the Fuld Fellows scholarship: Claire Alano, Alison Anderson, Samantha Boaz, Lori Bowermaster, Anne Cavett, Kristin DelleDonne, Bonnie Dowling, Laura Gigante, Kristin Erekson, Meghan Greeley, Nicole Holuba, Pamela Homiak, Shannon McDonnell, Lyndsay Murray, Lisa Nagy, Katy Olive, Nancy Osborne, Anthony Pho, Megan Shepter, and James Small. The Helene Fuld Health Trust is the nation's largest private foundation devoted exclusively to nursing students and nursing education. The grant, divided into $500,000 a year for three years, will support 120 undergraduate Leadership Fellows and prepare the program for long-term success, sustainability, and broad dissemination

As part of the Matrix Project, SON staff members have worked for years to implement new computer modules for SON Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Billing, and Records & Registration. Kudos to Sylvia Lee and Kristina Guanzon, Admissions; Flora Wharton, Elaine Bryant and Phyllis Wilcox, Financial Aid; Linda Blankenship, Libby Miles, Nicole Blake, and Winter Backmon, Records and Registration; Amy Wisowaty and Patrice Hamilton, Business Office; and Tom Knowlden, Colleen Hughes, and Amanda Pflaumer, Computer Network Services. All four modules are now completely integrated in the School of Nursing and the rest of the University.
