Faculty
Kathi White and Nancy Woods won
this year's
Excellence in Teaching Awards, which reward
faculty members who stand out in their role as
both teacher and mentor to students. Woods

Patti Abbott was the sole nurse to sit on
a panel of fourteen nationally acknowledged
experts to brainstorm methods of using
informatics to improve health sciences, health
services, and the health of the public. The
National Academies will use input from the
workshop to develop plans for projects to be
executed over the next three years.
Dean
Martha Hill was elected as a member
at-large to the Executive Committee of the AACN
Board of Directors.
Joan Kub was nominated to participate in a
Public Health Nursing Leadership Initiative by
the Health Services Research Administration
(HSRA). Joan will represent schools of nursing
as a member of a workgroup composed of other
representatives from schools of public health,
schools of nursing, and the practice community.
Faculty member Aisling McGukin was
awarded the Refugee Women's Advocates Award for
Outstanding Volunteerism from the International
Rescue Committee at the International Women’s
Day breakfast at Dunstins Restaurant on
Saturday, March 11, 2006.
At
Nurses' Night in Annapolis on February 9, 2006,
Rosemary Mortimer
joined in briefing nurses and nursing students
as a featured speaker from the Maryland Nurses
Association (MNA) Legislative Committee. Sixty
legislators attended the reception that followed
and nurses had the opportunity to speak to them
individually about issues before the Maryland
General Assembly.
Ellen M. Ray received a Johns Hopkins
University School of Nursing
Dean's Award, given to outstanding employees
who exemplify the school's values and set a
standard of excellence in the workplace.
Cynda Rushton served on the Institute
of Medicine National Academics Organ Donation
committee that reported on various ways to
increase organ donation rates including those
whose deaths are a result of irreversible
cardiac failure.
Phyllis
Sharpswas presented the Nursing Network on
Violence Against Women International 2006 Award
for Excellence in Practice on April 7, 2006 in
Portland, OR. The award is given in recognition
of outstanding contributions in the area of
violence against women and children through
nursing practice.
In addition, Sharps was honored by her alma
mater as one of four University of Delaware
alumni who were inducted into the
Alumni Wall of Fame on May 5, 2006.
Dan Sheridan received a $34,525 grant
from the Governor’s Office of Crime Control &
Prevention (GOCCP) to coordinate two Forensic
Nurse Examiner Pediatric Trainings in Maryland.
Elizabeth (Ibby) Tanner has been
appointed a Commissioner for the Baltimore City
Commission on Aging and Retirement Education
(CARE).
Students
Doctoral
student Marguerite Baty
(right) was selected to participate in the
Johnson & Johnson Community Health Care Scholars
Program for 2006 through 2008. She will work
with the “Reach Out and Connect” project of the
Ozark Mountain Health Network in Clinton,
Arkansas.
Doctoral student Barbara Biedrzycki
received a $30,000 research scholarship from the
American Cancer Society to explore why cancer
patients participate in research trials and
clinical trials.
Dean Martha Hill and graduate students
Megan Hoffman and Neysa Ernst
testified before the Maryland Senate Education,
Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee on
the Nurse Support Program Assistance Fund
(SB230/HB322). The bill passed on May 2, 2006.
JHUSON
students have been elected to the Maryland
Association of Nursing Students Board of
Officers: Rachel Walker, President;
Adrienne Clark, Secretary; Nicole
Mitchell, Membership; and Nancy Poznak,
Newsletter Editor.
A student committee spearheaded by Tiffany
McFarlane, Jessica Deputy, and
Maia LeBlanc
organized to make this year’s
Honoring Diversity Week a success.
Staff
Steve
Klapper and Mfonobong Umana
received the Johns Hopkins University School of
Nursing
Dean's Award, given to outstanding employees
who exemplify the school's values and set a
standard of excellence in the workplace. Two
additional staff, Sharon Ennis and
Ruth Hurd, received Honorable Mentions.
Staff member Phyllis Wilcox won the “Name
Your Staff Organization” contest. The name of
the new Staff Organization is SON Essentials.
Associate Dean of Finance and Administration
Claire Bogdanski has been named the 2006
JHMI chapter recipient of the JHU Women’s
Leadership Award. Claire was recognized for
leading the SON administrative components to new
levels while promoting the leadership skills of
others. The award was presented at the JHU
Women's Network 19th Annual Spring Luncheon,
Friday May 12, 2006.
