Faculty
Kathleen Becker was one of 80 graduate
nursing faculty from across the United States
competitively selected to attend a 3-day course
“End of Life Nursing Education Consortium –
Graduate Curriculum: Promoting Palliative Care
in Advanced Practice Nursing” in Pasadena,
California.
Jacquelyn Campbell won the election to
the Academic Council for a three year period
beginning in September 2006.

Miyong Kim has been invited to serve as a
member of the Nursing Science: Adults and Older
Children study section at the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific
Review. With other members, Kim will review and
make recommendations on grant applications
submitted to the NIH and will help ensure the
quality of the NIH peer review process.
Joan Kub was nominated to participate in
a Public Health Nursing Leadership Initiative by
the Health Services Research Administration in
May. She was a member of a work group composed
of representatives from schools of public
health, schools of nursing and the practice
community.
Cynda
Rushton, JHUSON associate professor and
program director of Johns Hopkins Harriet Lane
Compassionate Care, has been
selected as a 2006 Robert Wood Johnson Executive
Nurse Fellow. She is one of twenty nurse
leaders nationwide chosen to participate in this
three-year Fellowship program for nurses in
senior executive roles who aspire to lead and
shape the U.S. health care system of the future.
Phyllis Sharps was honored in May by her
alma mater, the University of Delaware, as one
of four alumni inducted into the
Alumni Wall of Fame.
Students
Doctoral student Nina Fredland has
accepted a faculty position as Assistant
Professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
“I am very grateful for the excellent doctoral
education I have received at JHUSON and will
keep in touch with my wonderful mentors and
classmates.”
Chase Gray '07 and Rachel Walker '07
have been
named recipients of the University Provost's
Undergraduate Research Awards. The awards,
which are given annually by Johns Hopkins
University to encourage baccalaureate students
to engage in research activity, will allow Gray
and Walker to work with faculty mentors, honing
their skills in the many facets of scientific
research.
Elizabeth McCarthy and Mary Paterno
of the accelerated class of 2006, ran in the 2nd
Annual High Heel Race at the Gay Pride Parade in
June. Both placed in the top 10.
Lisa Ormond '07 and Jeremiah Meeks
'07 were named recipients of the 2006 AACN
Scholarship and Lacey Ginsberg '07 and
Rachel Walker '07 were named recipients of
the 2006 Mayo Clinic’s Breakthrough to Nursing
Scholarship. Both scholarships are administered
by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses
Association.
Kitty
Poon '06 was awarded a 2006 Community
Service award from the SOURCE (Student Outreach
Resource Center), which serves as a channel for
student, faculty, and staff involvement with
community organizations and local projects. The
school's
Programa Salud also received an award in the
student group category.
Post-doctoral fellow Maya Shaha was
inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International at
the 17th International Nursing Research Congress
Focusing on Evidence-Based Practice in Montreal,
Quebec on July 19-22, 2006.
Eden
Stotsky '08 received the American Cancer
Society's Lane Adams Quality of Life award in
May for consistent excellence in care and
counseling to cancer patients and their
families. Stotsky, MSEd Health Educator at
the Johns Hopkins Colon Cancer Center, is
considered an expert in the field of patient
education for colon cancer. A survivor herself,
Stotsky has dedicated her work to helping
patients navigate their cancer journey, and give
them true hope they can continue to lead
fulfilling lives.

SON Office of Development & Alumni Affairs
has met their goal of $40 million in the Johns
Hopkins University Knowledge For the World $2
Billion Campaign. Congratulations to Debbye

Claire Bogdanski, associate dean for
finance and administration, has been named the
2006 JHMI chapter recipient of the
JHU Women's Leadership Award. Bogdanski was
recognized for leading the SoN administrative
components to new levels while promoting the
leadership skills of others.
