New Leadership Team Named to Key SON Positions
This summer marks the beginning of new
leadership at the helm of Johns Hopkins
University School of Nursing (JHUSON) academic
programs and the Center for Nursing Research and
Sponsored Projects (CNR). Marie Nolan,
DNSc, RN; Kathleen (Kathi) White, PhD,
RN, CNAA, BC; and Linda Rose, PhD, RN
have been tapped to serve as directors of the
school's academic programs and Gayle Page,
RN, DNSc, FAAN, is the new director of the CNR.
Faculty Research Featured in Monthly News &
Research Briefs
The August issue of "Hopkins Nursing News and
Research Briefs" covers research on domestic
violence in the military, news of the nation’s
first NCIS nurse, and articles on spiritual
well-being and treatment for breast cancer,
evidence-based nursing practice, quality patient
care, and nursing informatics.
Abbott Visits Ambassador; Discusses
Informatics
During a visit to Korea this summer, Patti
Abbott was invited to the Finnish
Ambassador's home for dinner. Abbott is

Classes Break Records
2006 has been a record-breaking year for the
School of Nursing. The School's largest
traditional class of 162 students graduated in
May, followed by the graduation of the largest
accelerated class of 146 students in July.
This achievement follows on the heels of the
acceptance of the largest accelerated class to
date - 165 students - who began classes at the
school in June.

Students Organize Health Fair
Faculty member Carm Dorsey and her summer
2006 community health clinical group organized a
health fair for children at Commodore John
Rogers grammar school in East Baltimore.
Nursing students shared information about
Smoking, Nutrition, Refusal Skills, and
Exercise.

Students get a Taste of Poverty
Faculty member Lisa Kelley and her group
of Community Health Students—Cara
Gutterman,
Kristina Massey, Eileen Montgomery,
Hilarea Amthauer, Elizabeth Kasameyer,
Angie Brubaker, Lisa Katulis, and
Kathleen Kostka—facilitated
the pilot of the Missouri Community Action
Poverty Simulation activity on May 9. Seventy
students in the Community Health Curriculum were
given the opportunity temporarily become a
member of a family living at or below the
poverty line and to try to meet assigned
financial and social needs that the family would
encounter.
Hopkins Pediatric ER Travels to Peru
Graduate student Missy Wright traveled to
Peru with the Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatrics
Emergency Room team, treating approximately
3,000 patients in 10 days in the villages of
Chulcuras and Pacaipampa.

Nightingala 2006 Benefits Community Health
Programs
Nightingala 2006, an evening of folk, country,
and bluegrass music performed by former John
Denver Band members and colleagues, raised over
$300,000 to benefit the Johns Hopkins University
School of Nursing community health centers and
the free nursing care programs that are vital to
vulnerable families and individuals in East
Baltimore.

Helps Stranded Lebanese Students
Five graduate nursing students from the American
University in Beirut (AUB) who now are unable to
return to their homes in Lebanon have received
an extended welcome from the Johns Hopkins
University School of Nursing (JHUSON) and the
Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Nursing
(JHHDON).
