This study of nursing intervention for low-income breastfeeding women examines the effectiveness of a unique health care delivery model - The Breastfeeding Support Team - in increasing the duration and frequency of breastfeeding. The study has provided undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students the opportunity to become intricately involved in the many different aspects of the research process.

Despite the fact that research has become an increasingly important part of the careers of health care professionals, students often approach research and formalized research courses with apprehension. The students involved in this project, however, have been thrilled by the knowledge and experience they have gained as members of a multi-disciplinary team. Working on this type of research endeavor has allowed them to apply the knowledge learned in formal courses to real-world settings.

Here are some tips for those of you interested in research:

  • identify your goals for involvement in the research project: what do you hope to gain from the experience?
  • investigate your options: you can become involved in a familiar area or explore new areas of interest.
  • be realistic: balance the demands of a research assistant position with your academic schedule
  • be flexible: there are numerous research activities that offer opportunities for learning, including literature review, recruitment, interviewing, data collection, and data analysis.

Here Are Some Examples of Student Involvement in this Research Project:

  • Recruitment of subjects
  • Directing a community-based nursing intervention team
  • Data collection through phone interviews and home visits
  • Development of creative incentives for study subjects
  • Manuscript development
  • Practice applications
