The objective of the proposed study is to develop, refine, and conduct preliminary testing of a nurse-led community health worker intervention to provide culturally appropriate cancer patient navigation (CPN) for rural African American elders.

This project further develops and evaluates an existing Historic East Baltimore (HEBCAC) anti-violence Summer Theatre Project to involve students from five middle schools in Baltimore and Washington, DC in a year round after-school mentoring and arts based anti-violence program. Additionally, a school-wide culture (attitudes and behavior) change initiative will be implemented and evaluated.

This website highlights a research study examining the costs of promoting breastfeeding. A randomized controlled trial testing an intervention to increase the duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding among low-income women during the first six months of their infants' lives is being conducted.

The Center on Health Disparities Research

The CHDR was created in 2001 with a five-year grant received from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with the purpose of identifying and eliminating health disparities and enhancing health disparities research. As the result of a partnership between Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University School of Nursing, the Center is one of eight partnerships funded by the NIH National Institute of Nursing Research and the NIH National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities to study disparities in health care.

Comprehensive Hypertension Care in Young Urban Black Men
NIH Funded Study R01NR004119 from 6/1996-5/1999

The study shows that personalized care and attention given by a research team can lower high blood pressure significantly in urban, black men. The study is significant because it targets some of the most vulnerable African American men who are at high risk for the effects of uncontrolled blood pressure such as stroke, heart failure and kidney failure. Additional social, economic, environmental and educational burdens make it difficult for members of this population to participate in regular medical care or make behavioral changes for health improvement.

The FACT Study - Fatigue and Cancer Treatment

The purpose of this randomized controlled trial is to determine the effects of a nurse-directed, home-based walking exercise program to mitigate fatigue and maintain physical functioning during adjuvant therapy for breast, prostate and colo-rectal cancer patients.

Several funded projects including a randomized clinical trial of nurse case management to control cholesterol, a study of barriers to and facilitators of cardiac rehabilitation for women, and a randomized controlled trial of soy and lipoproteins in postmenopausal women, are highlighted.
