COMMUNITY OUTREACH: CAROLINE STREET CLINIC

The Caroline Street Clinic provides free primary care services to the uninsured
of East Baltimore. The Clinic is the centerpiece of the
Johns Hopkins University Urban Health Institute (UHI), developed as a primary care demonstration project in 2002 in an effort
to improve the health of those who live in East Baltimore and to reduce barriers to healthcare.
Nursing students may
join the staff - comprised entirely of volunteers - that also includes medical students, nurses, physicians, dieticians and
pharmacists.
Members of the entire Johns Hopkins community who are bilingual
in Spanish and are appropriately trained may serve as language interpreters. The HIV testing and counseling service,
a component of the Clinic, is very active and is staffed by State Health Department trained Hopkins medical and nursing
students.
